Avodart is the European brand name for Dutasteride, which is an oral medication for treating symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men. The advantage of this medication is that it could be a new weapon in the fight against what is for many men a real problem. The active compound in Avodart is called Dutasteride and has the benefit of treating genetic male pattern hair loss on the vertex or top of the head and the mid-scalp area. Dutasteride has a similar chemical composition to the active ingredient in a better known treatment called Propecia. The name Avodart is the US brand name and the product has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration as well as in Europe for treating BPH.

Male pattern hair loss may not seem like an important issue but in today’s image conscious society, many men who suffer from BPH find it affects their self-confidence and in extreme cases can lead to depression and social alienation. Research has discovered that men who suffer from BPH or male pattern hair loss have an increased level of a particular hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This hormone is produced from the male hormone testosterone by an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. Biochemical analysis has revealed that there is a higher level of this enzyme in the bloodstream of men with BPH and in the scalps of men suffering from male pattern hair loss.

Avodart inhibits the body’s release of the enzyme, blocking the formation of DHT, interrupting a key trigger in the development of the condition and in male pattern hair loss. However, DHT not only triggers male hair loss, but has also been linked to prostate enlargement, shortening of the growing phase of hair, progressive miniaturisation of hair follicles, a decreasing number of visible hairs and even acne. Although it is only one of several male hormones in the body, its function initially is to trigger the development of external genitals in the male foetus but once this growth period is over it remains in the body for life, causing these problems later on.

The drug also showed good tolerance levels among test subjects. GlaxoSmithKline then completed phase II trials for FDA approval for Avodart as a treatment for hair loss. After six months of treatment the hair counts measured in a one-inch diameter circle increase by an average of 96 hairs, a significant increase over the hair increase levels promoted by the similar drug Propecia.

The extensive trials showed that Avodart was on average 30% more effective at promoting hair growth, which is why we at Globalclinic.com are now happy to offer it to our customers. Avodart has been fully approved by the US FDA and all European bodies as a treatment for BPH and so can be considered to be safe. Although it has been approved for BPH treatment it has not yet been approved specifically for treating male pattern hair loss and its affects are actually a side effect against the effects of BPH.

Results do vary, but Avodart has a similar action to Propecia in that it helps to fill in thin areas of hair growth on the scalp. Men generally will not regrow all the hair they have lost and hair loss does occur gradually over time, but Avodart can significantly reduce or delay the process. Clinical trials have shown that the product is safe, but should not be used in women and children. Pregnant women should not handle the medicine because of the possibility of absorption and men treated with Avodart should not donate blood for at least six months after their final dose. Men suffering from liver disease should consult their GP before taking Avodart.
