There are many generic versions of Minoxidil, but the only proven and clinically tested one is Regaine, manufactured by Upjohn and available in standard strength (2%) for use by both men and women. So why do some people loose their hair?

We are all born with our hair follicles already in place, and whilst some may change in size over time, we do not develop any new ones after birth. Adults have approximately 100,000 individual strands of hair and it is completely normal to loose between 40-100 strands every day. Hair loss is the result of the growth cycle of the hair follicles, and when an old hair ‘dies’, the growing phase starts again for a new hair to replace the dead hair. The cycle has three phases. The anagen phase is the growing phase which lasts for approximately 1,000 days, but can range from two to six years. During this phase the hair cells multiply rapidly, the hair shaft grows in diameter and the hair reaches maximum length. The second catagen phase last only one to two weeks and is the transitional or regressive phase and is when the hair stops growing. The final telogen phase lasts for about five to six weeks and during this period activity in the hair follicle is renewed. A new hair develops and forces the old hair out. This is when you may notice hairs in your brush or comb.

At any period, around 90% of most peoples’ hair follicles are in the anagen phase and approximately 10% are in the telogen phase. Noticeable hair loss is often caused by a short anagen phase and a long telogen phase. In male pattern baldness genes and hormones cause hair follicles to shrink so the hair becomes very short and fine. Eventually the hair follicles shut down completely.

Regaine is the only topical treatment (one that you rub into the skin) which is actually licensed for the treatment of male pattern baldness in the UK. It was originally developed (in tablet form) as a drug for high blood pressure. Doctors noticed that people on Minoxidil sometimes grew new hair and so the drug was reformulated for this purpose. In the UK, Regaine is a ‘Pharmacy Only’ medicine, which means you can obtain it from a pharmacy without a prescription, but only when a pharmacist is on the premises. Regaine cannot work miracles. About one-third of men using it get good hair growth on the bald patches, one-third get a fine, downy regrowth and some men may find they only get a limited response. The majority of men using it find that the rate of hair loss is decreased but the product will not halt the process completely. The usual time period in which you will see results from using the product is up to four months.
