Tesofensine

Tesofensine is being heralded as the chemical equivalent of stomach stapling in the fight against obesity – and was an accidental discovery. It was originally developed as a treatment for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease but was found to be ineffective. However, further testing showed that it was up to twice as effective as existing drugs as a treatment for obesity, according to a study published in 2008 in medical journal The Lancet.

A study of 203 obese patients (BMI 30-40kg/m²) with a mean weight of just over 100kg took part in a randomised, placebo-controlled, phase 2 study. The subjects were prescribed a limited energy diet and given a daily dosage of Tesofensine for 24 weeks. The results were astonishing – amongst the 161 patients who completed the trial, those prescribed a dose of 1.0mg of the drug lost on average 12.8kg, compared to the 2.2kg lost by those subjects taking the placebo. This represented a weight loss around twice that attained using sibutramine or rimonabant.

In March 2009, a meeting was announced between Danish company NeuroSearch and the FDA regarding this medication for the treatment of obesity in the second quarter of 2009 and later in 2009 with EMEA. (European Medicines Agency) The details of the stage 2 trials along with other clinical studies performed in 2008 will be presented. This will then determine NeuroSearch's details for the important phase 3 program along with a plan for the development of the drug.

With a rising tide of obesity in the developed world, Tesofensine is being seriously considered as the breakthrough in weight control drugs, and at Globalclinic.com we are watching developments very closely.
