Described as a 'wonder-pill', Xenical (also known as Orlistat) was launched in 1998 and has received backing from a host of medical publications including the Journal of the American Medical Association. Xenical is different in that it does not have a direct effect on your body’s metabolic system but works by coating the lining of your stomach with lipase inhibitors. This slows down the action of your digestive system and inhibits the absorption of high-calorie substances. By blocking the action of lipases (which break up dietary fats for absorption into the bloodstream) about one third of the fat in food passes directly through the body without being absorbed.

Xenical’s side effects are mild. In one study women on Xenical showed higher levels of breast cancer than women not using the drug. Although this research is not conclusive and no direct link has been proven between Xenical and breast cancer, women with a family history of the disease are advised against taking the drug until further studies have been made.
